Readers looking for resolution will have to wait for the sequel, as the ending is the very definition of a cliffhanger.Martha Is Dead, a visceral and engrossing thriller, takes place during the final months of World War II, set in the Tuscany region of Italy in 1944. As a first in a planned series, this British import sets up a story with plenty of questions but not one reliable answer, particularly when characters thought to be dead keep showing up again, alive and, very often, kicking. Although his penchant for violence can be disturbing, Blade’s hostility is tempered by his affection for Jaz, Becky’s daughter, and his own admissions of vulnerability.
His direct addresses to the reader, whom he calls “Bigeyes,” are at once disarming and enticing, effectively drawing the reader into an unfamiliar world filled with shadows and knives. This fast-paced thriller offers an intense look into street life and gang violence, made all the more authentic by Blade’s tight, curse-ridden narration as he navigates the dangers of the urban underground. On the run again, Blade is joined by sixteen-year-old Becky and her daughter, who are also being tracked by Blade’s enemies. With his uncanny ability to remain unseen, he has managed to carve out a life for himself on the streets by picking pockets, staying in empty houses, and generally avoiding trouble. At just fourteen, Blade already has a shady past and he’s been “playing dead” in the city for the last few years to escape it.
